In the textbook Communicating Online the Toulmin method “describes several key elements of an argument (…) the claim and the reasons and evidence (also called data) offered to support the claim.” (Julia Green) page 283. This is the Toulmin method in it’s simplest terms. This method is useful to understand others arguments and your own. It helps you to look at the logic of the argument.

A great example of the Toulmin method is the team Hailey vs. Selena drama. Tik Tokers are posing their arguments using claim, reasoning and evidence to portray the other one in a negative light.
Tik Tok @kylazingaround
Claim:
Hailey is making fun of Selena Gomez’s body.
Evidence:
Around that time Hailey Bieber posted a video saying “I’m not saying she deserved it but I’m saying gods timing is always right.” (Bieber) Selena commented on the video “she doesn’t let these things get her down.” (Gomez). Hailey took the video down
Reasoning:
The video was posted right after the shaming comments. When Hailey deleted the video it was confirmation that the shade was directed at Selena.
Claim:
Selena is overthinking and overreacting.
Evidence:
Hailey commented on her own video “I never comment on this type of thing but we were just having a girls night and did a random Tik Tok sound for fun. It’s not directed at anyone.” (Bieber).
Reasoning:
The video was very vague and not directed at anyone. Selena and Hailey have a history of beef. Selena took things out of context and was dragging up old drama from years ago.
