Land of the Giants: Online Communicating

Upon research of podcasts that discuss online communication I explored many different avenues. The podcast that I landed on is about how online communication has changed dating. “Big tech is transforming every aspect of our world. But how? And at what cost? (…) Through conversations with industry leaders, experts, and users, this series will look at the past decade of dating.” (Fox Media Podcast Network) This introduction is what made me listen to their podcast Land of the Giants Dating Dating Game

Online communication has changed so much of our world, but it has profoundly changed dating. Online communication facilitated my relationship with my boyfriend. We met each other online, and many of my peers met their significant others online too. Meeting in this way creates a tension free need. If you have never met the person IRL you can ghost them with no repercussions, but it is also a way to socially integrate with them before ever having met them. You can vet them on social media by looking at their Snapchat score, Instagram, pictures they have been tagged in etc.

In season seven episode one of Land of the Giants Dating Game the hosts said “when tinder launched in 2012, it changed dating culture and our expectations around dating forever by leveraging the iPhone and gamifying the dating experience.” (Sangeeta Sing Kurtz and Lakshmi Rengarajan). I found this to be a particularly interesting take. I have never considered how dating has transformed into a sort of game. I am curious if this has any correlation to the national age of marriage being on the rise. Do these new forms of communication satisfy the emotional needs of partners?

Social Media: Good or Bad?

As a society we are faced with pressing questions involving social media, and what to do with our impending generations. It is important to identify the good things social media does while also acknowledging the drawbacks. I do believe that with each social media platform comes it’s own set of pros and cons. This is because each platform appeals to different facets of our lives. Instagram is where we romanticize our own lives and post a highlight reel (con) where we keep our friends informed on major events happening in our lives (pro). TikTok can be an endless black hole where all of our time disappears (con), but you can learn new dances, recipes and add travel destinations to your bucket list (pro).      A large topic under discussion is if mental health promotion lies on the shoulders of the platform. I argue that this is not the platforms problem. While social media does create mental health issues it is up to the consumer to seek out menta...

Twitter Feuds

I chose a  Twitter feud between Chris Brown and Jenny Johnson. It is a famous incident that occurred in 2012. Here's a brief overview of what happened: Jenny Johnson, a writer and comedian, had been a vocal critic of Chris Brown for years due to his history of domestic violence. In November 2012, Johnson tweeted a sarcastic comment about Brown's latest tattoo, which appeared to be a depiction of a battered woman's face. Brown responded with a series of vulgar and aggressive tweets directed at Johnson, including insults and threats of violence. Johnson continued to engage with Brown, leading to a back-and-forth exchange that lasted several hours. The incident garnered widespread media attention and sparked a larger conversation about domestic violence and the way that celebrities are held accountable for their actions. It also raised questions about the role of social media in public discourse and the responsibility of public figures to engage with their critics in a respe...

Toulmin Method and Hailey vs. Selena

In the textbook Communicating Online the Toulmin method “describes several key elements of an argument (…) the claim and the reasons and evidence (also called data) offered to support the claim.” (Julia Green) page 283. This is the Toulmin method in it’s simplest terms. This method is useful to understand others arguments and your own. It helps you to look at the logic of the argument.  Julia Green  A great example of the Toulmin method is the team Hailey vs. Selena drama. Tik Tokers are posing their arguments using claim, reasoning and evidence to portray the other one in a negative light.  Tik Tok @kylazingaround Claim :  Hailey is making fun of Selena Gomez’s body. Evidence :  Around that time Hailey Bieber posted a video saying “I’m not saying she deserved it but I’m saying gods timing is always right.” (Bieber) Selena commented on the video “she doesn’t let these things get her down.” (Gomez). Hailey took the video down Reasoning :  The video was poste...
