Social Media: Changing the World?

Social media is here, and here to stay. I often wonder the long term impacts of social media. I would argue that there are many obvious positive things that come from the usage of social media. However, there are many drawbacks from using social media.

Something major happened on Social media in the year 2020. The modern civil rights movement took the social media world by storm. The murder of George Floyd spread like wildfire across all platforms and reached billions of people. This is something that has never happened before. Due to unheard of audience these things reached it sparked massive protests in almost all major cities in the United States.

Blackout Tuesday  was a day in 2020 where millions of people took to social media to show their solidarity with the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement.

Social media is changing the documentation of history. I believe this because almost everyone has a platform with an audience. History can be defined as many different things-big or small. Many more pictures and videos are taken on a daily basis. A singular persons history is way more defined now. From documentation of relationships, trips and even meals consumed.

However, social media can be harmful. It romanticizes the lives of others. It is detrimental to yourself confidence. This is because you are comparing your daily life that is nothing out of the ordinary to someone’s highlight reel. This can lead to a rabbit hole of destruction to your confidence. Picture this, your scrolling through your Instagram feed on a typical Monday night. Just got home from a long day of work and your lounging on the couch. You come across a high school classmates post. They are on a luxury getaway in Europe. Doing lavish things and enjoying fine dining. If you are able to keep a good perspective on social media, typically you’d be fine. However, this could cause some major self comparison. Thoughts like, “I don’t have the money for that kind of vacation,” “that dinner” or “those clothes.” This could really make you feel bad about your life and the things that you have accomplished. Social media definitely materializes our lives in a negative manner.

Social Media: Good or Bad?

As a society we are faced with pressing questions involving social media, and what to do with our impending generations. It is important to identify the good things social media does while also acknowledging the drawbacks. I do believe that with each social media platform comes it’s own set of pros and cons. This is because each platform appeals to different facets of our lives. Instagram is where we romanticize our own lives and post a highlight reel (con) where we keep our friends informed on major events happening in our lives (pro). TikTok can be an endless black hole where all of our time disappears (con), but you can learn new dances, recipes and add travel destinations to your bucket list (pro).      A large topic under discussion is if mental health promotion lies on the shoulders of the platform. I argue that this is not the platforms problem. While social media does create mental health issues it is up to the consumer to seek out menta...

Twitter Feuds

I chose a  Twitter feud between Chris Brown and Jenny Johnson. It is a famous incident that occurred in 2012. Here's a brief overview of what happened: Jenny Johnson, a writer and comedian, had been a vocal critic of Chris Brown for years due to his history of domestic violence. In November 2012, Johnson tweeted a sarcastic comment about Brown's latest tattoo, which appeared to be a depiction of a battered woman's face. Brown responded with a series of vulgar and aggressive tweets directed at Johnson, including insults and threats of violence. Johnson continued to engage with Brown, leading to a back-and-forth exchange that lasted several hours. The incident garnered widespread media attention and sparked a larger conversation about domestic violence and the way that celebrities are held accountable for their actions. It also raised questions about the role of social media in public discourse and the responsibility of public figures to engage with their critics in a respe...

Toulmin Method and Hailey vs. Selena

In the textbook Communicating Online the Toulmin method “describes several key elements of an argument (…) the claim and the reasons and evidence (also called data) offered to support the claim.” (Julia Green) page 283. This is the Toulmin method in it’s simplest terms. This method is useful to understand others arguments and your own. It helps you to look at the logic of the argument.  Julia Green  A great example of the Toulmin method is the team Hailey vs. Selena drama. Tik Tokers are posing their arguments using claim, reasoning and evidence to portray the other one in a negative light.  Tik Tok @kylazingaround Claim :  Hailey is making fun of Selena Gomez’s body. Evidence :  Around that time Hailey Bieber posted a video saying “I’m not saying she deserved it but I’m saying gods timing is always right.” (Bieber) Selena commented on the video “she doesn’t let these things get her down.” (Gomez). Hailey took the video down Reasoning :  The video was poste...
